The Best Of The Bay Of Naples | Sun Princess Mediterranean Cruise

Today, we go on a full-day tour of the Bay of Naples, with stops at Pompeii, Sorrento and the island of Capri.

Our lovely 7-Night Mediterranean Cruise aboard Princess Cruises’ newest Love Boat is almost coming to an end. But, we still have one last port to visit — Naples, Italy. Yes, Sun Princess has brought us to Naples, or Napoli as it’s known in its native name, to the birthplace of the modern-day Pizza as we know it.

Today, we have an intensive all-day tour, beginning at 8:30 AM, and only ending at 6:00 PM. We will first travel about 25 km from the Naples Cruise Port to Pompeii — about 30 minutes on the road. After that, it’s another 25 km on coastal and mountain roads, taking about 1 hour to arrive in Sorrento. We will then have lunch, then hop on a ferry heading to the Isle of Capri — 25 minutes away from Sorrento. Getting back to the ship is a 1-hour ferry ride back to Naples.

Needless to say, this is one of the most intensive shore excursions we’ve done. Not just on this voyage, or with Princess Cruises, but ever.

Meeting Our Tour Group

Our meeting point this morning was the Horizons Dining Room on Deck 7. Here, we exchanged our Shore Excursion tickets for our tour stickers, before being led onto our coach by the Sun Princess’ shore excursion team.

Our First Stop — Pompeii

From the Naples Cruise Port, our first stop was Pompeii — the city famous for being buried under 4 to 6 metres of volcanic ash, after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. As it was mostly preserved under the ash, Pompeii offers a unique snapshot of Roman life, frozen at the moment it was buried more than 1,900 years ago. Excavation of Pompeii didn’t begin until the 18th century. And according to our guide, the excavation and archaeological work is still on-going to this day.

Here, we went on an hour-long guided tour of the former city’s ruins.

Lunch in Sorrento

After Pompeii, we were bussed to our next destination — Sorrento. To get here, it was an hour-long drive on mountain roads with coastal views the closer we got.

In Sorrento, we have about 45 minutes of free time, before we have to head to a restaurant for lunch.

Strolling through the beautiful streets of Sorrento.

Lemon is the specialty of this region.

For lunch, we had a three-course meal at a local restaurant.

Isle Of Capri

After lunch, we caught the 2:05 PM ferry from Sorrento to the Isle of Capri.

We rode the funicular up the hill and got to Piazzetta di Capri

Dinner — The Catch by Rudi

For dinner tonight, we enjoyed a seafood feast, as we dine in at The Catch by Rudi. Here, freshness is king, as the ship prefers to source fresh, local seafood to keep this galley stocked.

Production Showtime — Viva La Musica

And before retiring for the night, we enjoyed Viva la Musica — a brand-new production show featuring and celebrating Latin music!

We loved the last part where the audience was asked to join the cast up front to dance! The new theatre design, which allows parts of the stage to be moved, really facilitates new ways of audience participation and interaction.
