With more than 3,400 years of history, Athens, Greece is one of the world’s oldest cities. The Greek Capital houses many ancient sights like the Acropolis of Athens, attracting visitors from all over the world by land, air, and sea — with 1.5 million visits by cruise guests alone in 2023.

Today, we have come to this ancient capital to meet Sun Princessthe newest Love Boat of the Princess Cruises fleet. We have been invited by Princess Cruises for a 7-Night Mediterranean Cruise aboard this magnificent vessel. From here in Athens, we will be heading to Barcelona, Spain, stopping in Bar, Montenegro; Corfu, Greece; Sicily, Italy and Naples, Italy.

Introducing Sun Princess

Delivered in 2024, this Sphere-Class Cruise Ship is the third ship to bear the name Sun Princess.

At 177,882 Gross Tons and 345.5 metres (1,133 feet) long, Sun Princess is the largest ship to ever sail for Princess Cruises. She has room for 4,300 guests (double occupancy), accommodated in 2,157 staterooms. She boasts 21 decks in her 60.96 metre-(200 ft) height — around 7.6 Merlions stacked head-to-toe.

Sun Princess was built in Monfalcone, Italy by Fincantieri Cantieri Navali Italiani.

She was christened by her godmother, Award-Winning Actreess Hannah Waddingham on 23rd April 2024.

Arriving At The Terminal / Check-In Formalities

Arriving at Piraeus Cruise Terminal

At the port of Piraeus, Sun Princess was waiting for us at Terminal B. The Port of Piraeus has 11 berths across three cruise terminals for passenger vessels of all sizes.

Check-In Formalities

Just like most of the industry today, Princess Cruises allows guests to complete their Check-In Online. Before departure, guests can use the Princess Cruises Mobile App to input information like their travel documentation, contact information, security photo, onboard payment and more.

Guests can also opt to have their Ocean Medallion shipped to their home before departure. For guests that have completed Online Check-In and have their Medallion, they proceed to the Green Lane for an expedited embarkation process. Unfortunately, this feature is only available to residents of Canada and the United States of America.

However, as residents of Singapore, we were not eligible to have our medallion shipped to us ahead of time.

Instead, once at the port, we proceeded to the Blue Lane to pick up our Ocean Medallion. Guests without the Medallion should still complete their Online Check-In to expedite their Check-In Process.

Boarding Hour On Sun Princess

And once it was time to head aboard, we crossed the gangway, and set foot on Sun Princess.

Passing by The Piazza. This is the ship’s main atrium, and forms up a portion of the large sphere on the ship’s side.

At The Eatery on Deck 9, the ship is welcoming guests aboard with lunch.

Something new about the “buffet” — it isn’t a traditional self-serve buffet. Instead, the dishes are displayed behind glass cases, and served by crew members. It made the experience feel more upscale, as well as improving on the hygiene aspect.

There’s also outdoor seating along a promenade on Deck 9.

Our Stateroom

Our stateroom for this trip is a Cabana Mini-Suite on Deck 10.

Fairly standard queen bed and sofa here..

The main highlight of the room was the Cabana area. The area can be an extension of the balcony, or an extension to the stateroom.

Large balcony with loungers.

Long-time Princess guests will realise that this room does not come with a walk-in closet. Instead, large suitcases can be stowed under the bed.

The New Highlights

Once settled in, we went to look around our home-away-from-home. Here’s some of the features that caught our eye:

The Dome

Taking inspiration from the terraces of Santorini, The Dome is a cutting-edge entertainment space area, enclosed by its characteristic dome-shaped glass roof. The space is multi-level, an multi-purpose — used as a pool by daylight, and as stage for shows by starlight. It features acrobatic performances created in partnership with the renowned Cirque Éloize.

Tip: Go early for the Cirque Éloize shows! The Dome fills up very quickly.

Wake View Terrace

Princess Cruises has placed emphasis on sweeping ocean views and natural light aboard its Sphere-Class ships, offering guests relaxation with the ocean vistas around them. The Wake View Terrace features an infinity pool, bar, loungers and unparalleled views, located on Deck 8 Aft.

We, however, think it’s perfect for enjoying the arrivals and departures into, and out of ports-of-call.

It’s also a good place to harbour-watch!

Park19 Family Activity Zone

A first on Princess Cruises, Park19 on Deck 19 aft of Sun Princess is a brand-new addition to Princess Cruises’ portfolio of onboard amenities.

Designed for a new cruise demographic comprising of families, the newly-envisioned space caters to the younger, and young-at-heart. It’s just one of the many changes that Princess is incorporating to attract new and first-time cruisers, as well as family groups. Described as a “family activity zone”, Park19 features nine activities, fit for the entire family to enjoy.

Note: Park19 is currently not open to guests at this time. The facility is currently undergoing testing.

Dinner at Horizons Dining Room

The centerpiece for the onboard gastronomy experience, the Horizons Dining Room is the lavish, three-deck Main Dining Room spanning the aft of decks 6 to 8. There is space for more than 1,900 guests to dine simultaneously, with a daily-changing menu.
