Japan's Southern Islands With Diamond Princess | Day 6: Keelung, Taiwan (for Taipei)

We have left Japan, and now we are in Keelung - the Gateway to the Taiwanese Capital.

Day 6 of our 8-Night trip aboard the Diamond Princess has brought us to our first (and only) port-of-call outside Japan. We have arrived in Keelung, Taiwan, the port city of Taipei.

Getting Off The Ship

Do NOT Bring Food Items Down With You!

Taiwan has strict rules regarding food items being brought into the country due to African Swine Fever and Bird Flu outbreaks affecting countries throughout the region. Guests are remind not to bring food products, especially meat products like ham, sausages and bacon, or risk hefty fines of up to NT$ 10,000,000 (more than 300,000 US Dollars).

We did however, appreciate the abstract art on the sign.

Otherwise, there’s a small gift shop in the terminal, where guests can purchase local souvenirs to take home

Getting To Taipei

Keelung is located approximately 30 km (18 mi) away from the city centre. Guests looking to head into the city can catch a train at Keelung Station, and travel by rail into the city centre.

One ticket will set you back $41.00 New Taiwanese Dollars, which works out to around $1.76 Singapore Dollars, or $1.31 US Dollars

There are also Taxis outside the cruise ship pier.

Once we arrived, we took a walk around the city.

Enjoying Some Local Bites

We stopped for a snack break at a local eatery.

Visiting The Starlux Airlines Store

We’ve been to Taipei a few times before, so we decided to skip the more touristy parts of town and went straight to the Starlux Airlines Store.
(We may be cruise people, but we fly a lot for these cruises too.)

If you like planes, the Starlux store should be on your to-go list.

The inside was outfitted with airplane-themed decor.

Back To The Ship

Before long, it was time to get back to the ship.

Dinner At Horizon Court

Onboard, we had dinner in the Horizon Court - the ship’s Buffet.

Evening Entertainment At The Grand Piazza

Tomorrow is a Sea Day.
